Strategic Networking for Career Changers

For career changers, traditional networking advice often falls short. The challenge isn’t simply expanding your network but strategically reorienting it toward your target field.
Working with clients navigating major transitions, I’ve developed a focused approach I call “Network Triangulation”:
First, identify and connect with three distinct groups: industry insiders who understand the day-to-day reality of your target role, recent transitioners who successfully made similar moves, and hiring managers who can provide perspective on what they value in candidates from alternative backgrounds.
A former financial analyst transitioning to UX design applied this approach by conducting 15 targeted conversations: 5 with established designers, 5 with former finance professionals now in design, and 5 with design team leaders. This triangulated perspective provided a comprehensive view of her transition path.
Most importantly, approach networking as mutual value exchange rather than extraction. Even as a newcomer, you bring fresh perspectives and cross-domain insights that can benefit established professionals in your target field.
