Here’s how I navigated setting boundaries without being labeled “not a team player” or sacrificing career growth:

Start with data, not emotions When I finally addressed the after-hours calls, I didn’t lead with how exhausted and resentful I felt. Instead, I tracked patterns: “I’ve noticed our team is regularly communicating between 8-10 PM. Is there a structural reason these conversations can’t happen during business hours?”

This approach revealed that my boss was calling late simply because that’s when she remembered questions—not because anything was urgent. A simple solution emerged: I created a shared document where she could drop non-urgent questions any time, which I’d address first thing each morning.

Create boundaries with solutions attached “I can’t do that” never works as well as “Here’s what I can do instead.” When asked to join a standing 7 AM meeting that conflicted with family responsibilities, I didn’t just decline. I offered to:

  2. Join from 7:30-8:00 for key decisions
